SHOW ME THE METAL

18 11 2009

Metal fashion has made its way into music videos by artists such as Lady Gaga & Beyonce this past year. This “Metal Couture” is becoming the staple of futuristic fashion. MANUEL ALBARRAN was one of the only metal fashion designers in the industry, however I’ve noticed a few more emerging with increasing popularity of futuristic looks. MANUEL ALBARRAN has been dedicated to research a new artistic concept of metal by creating his line of Metal Couture. His work is developed through a unique combination of metals along with different materials & techniques for fashion, art & cinema. I’m sure these designs aren’t geared for everyday life, but of course for a photo shoot or music video it can definitely be a fabulous head turner :-).

BELOW ARE PHOTOS OF THE MOST RECENT PIECES BY MANUEL ALBARRAN

HE WENT WITH A SUPERHERO THEME WHICH INCLUDED DOMINATING METAL ACCESSORIES.

AS FAR AS TRENDS GO, THERE IS NO DOUBT IN MY MIND THAT THE PIECES FROM DESIGNER READY-TO-WEAR (RTW) COLLECTIONS WILL BE IMITATED & EVENTUALLY FLOOD THE DEPARTMENT STORES & BOUTIQUES THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. TRENDS ARE GREAT & THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH BEING DEVOTED TO TRENDS…. THERE IS ALSO NOTHING WRONG WITH TAKING THE MORE SINGULAR ROUTE BY JUST WEARING WHAT LOOKS GREAT ON YOU 🙂

Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear Collections

I’ve chosen to showcase two top designers who have collections for Spring 2010 that stood out of the box.

I have picked 6 of my favorite pieces from each runway show.

*BALENCIAGA*

This fashion house is a personal favorite. Designer Nicolas Ghesquiere has given Balenciaga it’s standing as a truly UNIQUE line especially in comparison to most major fashion labels. The Spring 2010 collection had such a significant spark because it is literally different from the things other designers have constructed for the season. “I wanted to do something urban. No more history for the moment!” Nicolas said backstage before sending out the Balenciaga 2010 Spring line that put the high fashion in street athleticism.

Not only does Balenciaga dominate when it comes to being distinct, this house is world renown for quality & intricate engineered designs all the way down to the fabrics.

The intricacy is not necessarily visible to the eye in the photographs. For example, the popular “hoodie” designs in this collection are engineered from molded leather, woven jersey & nylon foam (never even been attempted in the past). The boots in this collection have ankle sections constructed with either hand-loomed fabric or a meltdown of white, blue & green strips of leather, laser-compressed into a striated mixture. What looks like “jeans” from a distance is actually vegetable-dyed leather. Way to push the limits.

Below are runway photos of my 6 favorite pieces from this collection…

( Notice the “urban-warrior” make-up… FABULOUS!!! )

Model: Magdalena Frackowiak
Model: Freja Beha Erichsen

This urban collection took the generalized high fashion look to new lengths…

The next collection is another line that stood out amongst the leading designers.

*D&G*

Domenico Dolce & Stefano Gabbana never seize to amaze me! This Spring collection takes us on a sexy ride back to the wild wild west. From faded denim snap-front shirts, creamy blouses, distressed boyfriend jeans, all the day down to laser-cut suede bloomers & minis. This collection was so out of the box!

I love how the Dolce & Gabbana house just picks a theme then runs with it to the finish line.

What else was in this collections??

  • Fanny packs
  • Bandanas
  • Mail bags
  • Studded leather cowboy boots
  • Saddle-leather bustier dresses
  • Tiered maxi skirts
  • Ruffled suede cowboy boots
  • A few tailored pieces

Below are runway photos of my 6 favorite pieces from this collection…

Chanel & Jourdan Take TeenVogue

Jourdan & Chanel's teenVOGUE cover

These two young supermodel’s are bringing much-needed diversity into the fashion industry. The November issue of teenVOGUE showcases the industries leading black models. I love them both!

Jourdan Dunn

Nineteen-year-old Jourdan Dunn was discovered at a chain store in her native London by the same agency that lifted Kate Moss out of obscurity. She quickly established herself in the fashion elite with a history-making turn on the runway at Prada—the five-foot-ten Brit was the first black model to walk a Prada show in over a decade, the last one to do so having been Naomi Campbell in the nineties. “Everyone kept saying, ‘Jourdan, you know how huge it is if you do this,'” she says. “Prada is notorious for cancelling girls last minute, so I was like, Okay, I’m confirmed, but I’m not going to get all excited until I’m actually on the runway. As I was lining up, I was still thinking, Any minute now they can come round and tell me, ‘Jourdan, you’re not doing the show.’ So once I turned the corner and stepped onto the runway, I was like, Oh my God, I’m doing Prada!'”

Chanel Iman

For those of you who have never opened a magazine before, here’s a little background on Chanel. Her full name is Chanel Iman Robinson. Yes, she was named after that Chanel; no, not after that Iman (her cousin happens to share the name with the seventies supermodel). Chanel grew up in Los Angeles, signed with Ford Models at twelve, landed her first Vogue cover at sixteen, and now at eighteen is one of the youngest Victoria’s Secret models in the company’s history. She’s appeared as a guest judge on America’s Next Top Model, hosted by another former super (she calls Tyra Banks “my mentor”). She’s assumed such a high profile that her name regularly pops up in gossip columns like “Page Six,” which have romantically linked her to everyone from Kanye West to music producer Ryan Leslie. She claims both are “just friends.” Her actual boyfriend, who hangs out on the sidelines during the interview, is, by her own account, “just a regular guy.”

WHAT ELSE??

Last month the Jourdan Dunn and Chanel Iman also appeared together along side models Sessilee Lopez and Arlenis Sosa Pena for the September 2009 cover of i-D magazine. The magazine’s black models cover has the four supermodels winking against a backdrop of colorful graffiti.

At the shoot the girls discussed the difficulty of being an “ethnic” model in today’s fashion industry.

Jourdan says on the topic, “There are loads of black models working and the idea that there’s only a few of us, or four of us, to let in as top models at any one time is just bullsh*t. It creates an unnecessary competition when we should be standing together.” Chanel adds in, “It usually takes an ethnic girl — I’m not saying black, I’m saying ethnic, let’s make that clear — twice as long. We’ve gotta work extra-hard to stay in the game and stay with the girls who do well but aren’t ethnic.  Some girls can skip seasons, but us ethnic girls, we cannot skip a season because that’ll kill us.” However, Jourdan will actually be out for a season considering her pregnancy. Jourdan keeps her boyfriend very private but she did say at the shoot, “My boyfriend didn’t even know I was a model when I started going out with him and we’ve been together for three years now. It’s hard, you never really know whether people want to be around Jourdan or Jourdan Dunn, and he’s been there from when I was just Jourdan.”

A pregnant Jourdan Dunn did make an appearance in Jean Paul Gaultier’s Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear fashion show…

In her seventh month of pregnancy — she’s due with a boy in December — Jourdan Dunn hit her first catwalk of the season  in a padded cone bra and baby bump plate for Jean Paul Gaultier.

official-graffit-album-cover

Chris Brown’s album cover seems to be causing some controversy. I’m loving the futuristic direction Chris has decided to go with for this album. The album cover shown above debuted yesterday and apparently some people have a problem with Chris’s choice of attire for the cover. I thought the outfit was sexy. Now I’m sure if you asked me how I felt about men in “leggings” (the pants don’t really look like leggings to me) before I saw this I probably wouldn’t approve but Chris definitely pulled the look off. Everyone isn’t Chris Brown though so I hope I don’t start seeing other guys trying to pull this look off.

Chris expressed his frustration on twitter a short time ago by saying:

“WHO CARES IF MY PANTS R FITTED. its called fashion. IM SO TIRED OF CLOSED MINDED PEOPLE. IM 100% COMFORTABLE WIT MY SEXUALITY. IM A GROWN MAN. MY FASHION ISNT LIMITED TO BAGGY AZZ JEANS AND FITTED CAPS.. i did that in 05. CMON son. HATING IS SO LAME..”

WHAT’S [IN] SEASON…

9 10 2009

jourdan-dunn-topshop-02

Although sometimes style trends are developed by celebrities, fashion trends derive from the runway. Designer collections typically have similar styles & these designs are the ones that stand out. When the top designers come out with their line for the next season other designers build off that look for that upcoming season. Stylists & buyers then get those looks on & off the racks at shops around the world. That’s when these trends hit the streets.

The fashion shows exhibit designs well in advance thus we can call the process of predicting which styles will become trends is forecasting for the next season.

WHAT WAS FORECASTED FOR THIS SEASON??

  • THE STRONG SHOULDER

Marc Jacob’s Fall 2009 collection for Louis Vuitton inspired all if not most of the trends we are seeing in stores & on the red carpet this season. Louis Vuitton is always a big fashion trendsetter…

    Jimmy Choo at H&M???

    1 10 2009

    Jimmy Choo for H&M

    JiMMY CHOO FOR H&M

You heard right, Jimmy Choo for H&M!!!

For those of you who’ve always wanted a pair of Jimmy Choo shoes but can’t even grasp the idea of spending $400 to $1,000 on an average pair of Jimmy Choo’s your dreams have finally come true! Jimmy Choo has partnered up with H&M to launch a collection of shoes, accessories & even some clothing for both men & women. H&M has collaborated with Madonna, Stella McCarthy, Roberto Cavalli and many more top designers but this will be the first collaboration with an accessories brand. The collaboration will feature shoes starting at only $60!!!! That is practically FREE in comparison to the upscale line’s retail price. Do you understand how big this is????

HERE IS THE FIRST ADVERTISEMENT FOR THE LINE:

    jimmy_choo_ad_main

We are privileged to be among the fashion greats who have been affiliated with H&M so far, and to be designing a collection appealing to fashion savvy, street smart women, and to be including some great pieces for men, too. Jimmy Choo will bring to H&M a sophisticated, fashion forward, accessible and glamorous collection – the perfect party pieces to buy now and then wear out that night! -Tamara Mellon, Founder and President, Jimmy Choo.

We adore Jimmy Choo’s shoes and bags. They are glamorous and sexy, and they add instant style to the simplest of outfits. I like the way we have worked with clothes to accessorize the shoes and bags rather than the other way around. This collaboration is particularly exciting because it’s our first shoe designer collection. It’s a joy to be able to offer top end designer shoes and bags of excellent quality to our customers. -Margareta van den Bosch, creative advisor, H&M.

The Jimmy Choo for H&M line is set to unveil on NOVEMBER 14th 2009 in approximately 200 H&M locations around the world! If your thinking this is just going to be another “whatever” line of shoes you are DEAD WRONG! This line was definitely not half-assed. The Jimmy Choo designers without doubt stayed true to the reputation the Jimmy Choo name holds. I am very impressed with this line. The quality & designs for the collection are far from cheap or tacky.

The Jimmy Choo name carries so much prestige that you only expect the best from anything with the “Jimmy Choo” label. Although the brand was introduced in 1996, in the short period Jimmy Choo’s success is now world renowned. Some look down on the brand because it is going to be launching this inexpensive & accessible collection, but I think it is great that they are targeting the younger & broker customer. Someday I hope to be able to purchase Jimmy Choo shoes (check out their new collection at www.jimmychoo.com) but for now “Jimmy Choo for H&M” will do the trick ;-).

Don’t Burn a Hole in Your Pockets !

    30 09 2009

    finance4

Fashion trends are not so hard to forecast. Anyone can predict what’s going to be “in” one season & what is going to be “out” the next. When I look at it, it isn’t really a big secret at all. For those of you who don’t keep up to date on the fashion tip, you may not know that designers debut their collections for each season the season BEFORE. In the fashion world there are only two seasons, Fall and Spring. September (fall) is like the beginning of the fashion fiscal year.

This past week in Milan’s fashion week the world’s top designers premiered their designs for the upcoming Spring/Summer season of 2010, & the week before New York City’s Mercedes Benz fashion week show cased even more collections for Spring/Summer 2010. So when you think about it we can look at these fashion shows & designer collections to see what trends are set in play for 2010 before the year even ends.

My point is… we can look back to last season when the Fall 2009 collections were revealed & determine what’s “IN” this season. Having a high-fashion off the runway look doesn’t have to burn a hole in your pocket though. You can have that Louis Vuitton look without paying the Louis Vuitton Ready-to-Wear prices (you’d be better off buying a house & saving a few thousand dollars).

HERE ARE SOME 2009 READY-TO-WEAR DESIGNER COLLECTIONS THAT HAVE LOOKS YOU CAN FIND AT AFFORDABLE PLACES :-)…..

The tough-chic trend was very popular in Fall 09 runway shows. Balmain’s Christophe Decarnin, Haider Ackermann, Alexander Wang, and Roland Mouret all contributed in making this look a have-to-have.
